National HIT Week 2014

September 17th, 2014

DVHIMSS was well represented this week at HIMSS' annual Public Policy Summit. Three DVHIMSS members including Peg Meadow, DVHIMSS Board President, Joe Miller, DVHIMSS Advocacy Committee Chair and Dr. Thompson Boyd represented Pennsylvania when we met with senior staff from several congressional offices representing Pennsylvania including Senators Toomey and Casey and Representatives Gerlach and Meehan.

We represented the HIMSS National asks which were:

  1. Congress should minimize disruption in our nation's health system emanating from federally mandated health IT program changes.
  2. Congress should fund the National Coordinator for Health IT to achieve interoperability, improve clinical quality and ensure patient privacy and safety.
  3. Congress should expand telehealth services to improve patient access and outcomes and decrease healthcare costs.

We introduced DVHIMSS to these offices as key stakeholders and resources to
them on health IT.

We also heard Dr Karen DeSalvo, National Coordinator for Health IT speak to
ONCs plans to address interoperability and the use of big data to create a
learning health system.
